Dr. James Kelley
Veterinarian
Dr. James P. Kelley, better known as “Doc,” is the managing owner of Kelley’s Animal Clinic. Doc Kelley founded Kelley’s Animal Clinic in July 1970, after graduating from Michigan State University and earning his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Doc Kelley was born and raised on Grand Rapid’s Westside and when he opened Kelley’s Animal Clinic over 54 years ago he finally achieved his childhood dream of loving and caring for animals.
For many years he provided medical and surgical care, spays, neuters, and low-cost vaccines to the Kent County Humane Society until they hired in-house veterinarians. When they moved from their old facility on Bristol to their current location they dedicated their surgical suite to Dr. Kelley in honor of all the free and low-cost services he had provided them over the years. Kelley’s Animal Clinic became a designated Humane Society in its own right as it continued to do outreach programs to surrounding rescues and shelters, once again helping to support their medical and surgical needs at a low cost for their animals.
In February 2010, Doc Kelley saw the overwhelming need for support from overcrowded shelters and founded his own non-profit rescue 501 3(c), Kelley’s Heart-to-Heart Pet Adoption Center, Inc. Hundreds and hundreds of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies have been rescued, received medical and surgical care, were given love and socialization skills and have been screened to find their forever homes since then. We receive some funding from the adoption fees and a few donations, but most funding comes from Doc Kelley and his love and compassion for animals or it couldn’t survive. Many times Doc has come home and told his wife about some sick or injured animal that a family had no money to treat and with tears in their eyes they were going to put their animal down, but Doc just couldn’t put them through that because he knew he could save the their beloved fur baby.
One thing you have to understand, his first love will always be animals. That’s why he and his wife have a family of 4 legged fur babies of their own. They have taken home dogs that were dying and owners surrendered because they couldn’t care for them. Doc and his wife not only gave them the medical care they needed to see them through or try to save them but surrounded them with love and attention in their home until they drew their last breath. In 2014 Dr. Kelley was awarded Business of The Year by the City of Walker. Each year Doc Kelley has continued to keep improving his skills through continuing education. He studies and looks for new and improved ways to treat your beloved fur babies. He personally offers his expanded surgical skills, and stem cell therapy and has brought an updated surgical suite and even CT scan capabilities to his clinic. His decades of experience and continuing education have given him the opportunity to build on his encyclopedia of knowledge and skills and the joy to do what he loves most, continue to love and care for your beloved kittens, cats, puppies, and dogs.

Ashlee
Office Manager
My name is Ashlee, and I am the office manager over at Kelley’s Animal Clinic. My fur babies’ names are Mabel and Enzo, as well as my two cats Chai and Moose. If you come to our clinic, chances are that you have been greeted by my “assistant manager” golden retriever! My favorite thing to do is meet all of the cute fur-babies that come into our lobby. In my spare time, I like to snuggle up with my dogs and rewatch “Friends” or read a good book.
